'70 Girls 70' is a musical adaptation of Peter Coke's play 'A Breath of Spring' and was first produced in America in 1971. The music of John Kander and the lyrics of Fred Ebb ensured that the show gained a high reputation despite a relatively short Broadway run. The show finally made it to England in 1990 at the Chichester Theatre and later at the Vaudeville Theatre London. Our production was staged in November 1997 at the Plaza Theatre, Romsey
The simply constructed show within a show begins with a group of actors on a bare stage dispelling the myth surrounding 'old folks'. We learn that they live in a run down retirement hotel, and their lives, having fallen into a rut, have become as drab as their surroundings. All this is set to change when one of the former residents, Ida, returns to the fold full of zest, a renewed enthusiasm for life, and an extraordinary scheme for improving everyone's standard of living.

As the play progresses, the 'gang' recapture fun, adventure, friendship and love, and the triumpahant realisation that just because they have reached a "certain age" they do not necessarily have to slow down! Perhaps, then, the message is that all of us, no matter what our age, should dare to take a chance - or as Ida's closing affirmation, "Say Yes".
