Dames at Sea

Music by Jim Wise, Lyrics by George Haimsohn & Robin Miller

by arrangement with Samuel French

Dames at Sea, an affectionate spoof of early Hollywood musicals was inspired in part by the same 1933 backstage movie on which the more elaborate 42nd Street was later based. In this imaginative show, Ruby, a sweet young thing fresh from Centerville, Utah, lands a job in the chorus of a Broadway-bound musical, Dames at Sea, meets sailor-songwriter Dick, and ...well you know what happens.

Aussa Penniall and Bryan Newman as Ruby and Dick
Lena and Dave Morgan as Mona and The Captain Owing to financial difficulties, the show loses its theatre before opening night, but isn't it lucky that the show's star, Mona Kent, has an old flame, a captain of the fleet, to lend her his battleship on which to perform her show with the rest of the cast. One switch, though, Ruby gets her big break when the star can't go on because she's seasick.

The musical opened in New York's Bouwerie Lane Theatre on December 20th 1968 and ran for 575 performances. It played the Duchess theatre, London in 1969, and was revived off Broadway in 1985. Our production of this delightful musical was directed by Angela Arney our Musical Director was Ian Peters and our choreographer was Julia Watts. Our show was staged at the Plaza Theatre in Romsey from Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th October 1999.
